Simply apply the adhesive on the old surface and fix the new tiles. It’s that simple.

Best Adhesives for Tiling Over Old Surfaces

For a strong and long-lasting finish, Formaxx recommends:

  • For ceramic or stone tiles over old tiles or cement substrates:
  • Formaxx Platinum Tile Adhesive
  • Formaxx Premium Flexible Adhesive
  • Formaxx Filler Powder mixed with Latex Additive

  • For vinyl, linoleum, or tricky non-porous surfaces:
  • Formaxx Epoxy Tile Adhesive for a durable bond

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Surface Preparation

    • Ensure old tiles are firmly bonded.

    • Remove grease, wax, or dirt using a cleaning solution, rinse, and dry thoroughly.

  2. Adhesive Application

    • Spread a thin skim coat (~1.5 mm) of adhesive.

    • Use a notched trowel to create grooves.

  3. Tile Installation

    • Press new tiles firmly into place.

    • For larger tiles, use a beating block to ensure full contact.

  4. Grouting & Finishing

    • Once set, fill joints with high-performance grout such as Formaxx Premium Epoxy Grout or Stain-Resistant Grout for a perfect finish.

Things to Keep in Mind

While tiling over tiles is a great renovation method, here are a few cautions:

  • Check for Loose Tiles: If the existing tiles are not stable, replacement is recommended.

  • Mind the Height Difference: Adding a new layer may affect door and floor transitions.

  • Use the Right Adhesive: Always select adhesives designed for tile-on-tile applications.
